Story: A tough female editor assignes a cub reporter to interview the widow of a Veteran (Korea? Vietnam?) whose husband committed suicide by jumping from a window. The experience causes the cub reporter to quit the newspaper business.

Could this be what you're thinking of? "The following is a reprint of an interview with the writer Kurt Vonnegut that I conducted in 1990, which then ran in the Milwaukee Sentinel, in connection with a cable TV series based on his short stories. It is also an account of the subterfuge I employed to obtain it." "Date: July 16, 1990 Los Angeles, Calif. - Kurt Vonnegut tells this story about his days as a cub reporter for City News Bureau in Chicago during the late 1940s. He was sent to cover a grisly death a man was crushed to death by an elevator. Having done all he could at the scene, Vonnegut was advised by his boss to call the man's widow, but was told to identify himself as a policeman and record her anguished response. It was a "Front Page"-type ruse typical of the era, and he did it with little protest. Any moral objections were reserved until after the fact..." http://blogs.jsonline.com/dudek/archive/2007/04/13/My-Dinner-with-Vonnegut.aspx Looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Rainbow
