Every year we run an April Fools gag at our site, in an attempt to gain a bit of publicity. We're a bit short of ideas to use for this year. Could you provide a few suggestions for us to choose from? Our site is a high-traffic site offering a bunch of different services - search, email, documents, videos etc. We're international, but there are a bunch of localized sites too. Thanks in advance!

Hi larrysergey, What a fun question! Here are some ideas. Are any of them suitable for your needs? Why not ride the crest of a social phenomenon? Heave you heard of rickrolling? It's a bit of a preposterous idea, but you could redirect all your front page videos to a Rick Roll. Your book search currently just returns images in the web browser. That's really like a web page, not like a book. Think of the feel of the paper, the smell of a musty library book. Why not use a bit of JavaScript to recreate the smell of real paper in your book search results? Time distortion can always lead to some good jokes. You could provide an option to search for future versions of web pages? Maybe just 24 hours in advance, for a bit of fun. And why not allow emails to be sent in the past? They could even show up as "already read", to give the sender a great alibi for just about anything. Your document application could offer up some new and bizarre templates. How about a paper aeroplane template, for example? What about returning some puns in your search results? Maybe use that for one of your localizations - the Japanese love that kind of thing. You've always made a big thing about your algorithms. Why not turn it around 180 degrees? For your Chinese market perhaps, where the algorithms are perhaps not so totally in charge as elsewhere. You could talk about "search meat". I know that sounds odd in English, but it translates quite well to Chinese. Hey, why not let your Text Chat application automatically convert normal language to txt-speak? I mean you already do Klingon, Swedish Chef and Elmer Fudd translations, so this isn't even so way-out. It could even become a permanent feature. Your calendar is interesting but not that functional. It works pretty much like a shared paper calendar. Why not make it more interactive. Let it nag people into action, for example. And your social networking application is bizarrely-named, so why not give it an even more bizarre name just for April 1st? What do you think?

These are all cool ideas, but we want to do something really audacious. Last year we did a spoof about tISP (a toilet-driven internet service provider). It went down well, although it was a bit ... shall we say ... lavatorial. We want to top that this year.

Here you go then. There is currently some interest in sending humans to Mars. Why not jump on that bandwagon by being the first to do it? With your resources, it's quite plausible that you could be announcing it. You could develop the theme with an announcement, an FAQ, technical details, photos, etc. You could garner public interest by inviting applications from potential Mars colonists. There could be a questionnaire. You could ask the applications questions like "Are you prepared to eat algae for the duration of the 9-month flight?". To make it more plausible, you could announce a partnership. Perhaps you could approach Neil Armstrong? Or, given Virgin's plans for space tourism, perhaps you could partner with Richard Bransom himself? You could even release some YouTube videos announcing the mission (if you can find a way to stop Larry grinning all the time while he's on camera!). Looking forward to seeing the results, Regards, eiffel

Thanks! I really enjoyed these, especially the Larry & Sergey Virgle video. The Virgle application form is humorous, too.

Presumably for next year? You've left it very late for this year. If you want to succeed in business you will have to do better than this. Worried of Hove

To Worried of Hove: I guess larrysergey might not be in the same timezone as you are.
