Asked by montecristo on Thu 25 Dec 2008 - 1:25 am UTC:
Can I get from London Victoria to Maidenhead using public transport either (i) in less than an hour or (ii) using only one vehicle (train, bus, etc - without having to change anywhere)? It's for a commute, so arriving by 8.30am every morning.
Comment by User fp on Thu 25 Dec 2008 - 5:32 pm UTC:
I suppose arriving at 8:32 would not be too late?
Answer by Researcher answerfinder on Thu 25 Dec 2008 - 6:37 pm UTC:
Dear montecristo, The answer to question 1 and 2 is no, but very near it. There is a direct train between Victoria Railway Station and Maidenhead. It appears to be a week-day daily service and I have taken a sample date of Thursday 08 January, 2009. Leave 7.10 Arrive 8.24 Leave 7.20 Arrive 8.24 Leave 7.33 Arrive 8.32 You can use the journey planner on this page. http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/tt This is Maidenhead Station on Google Maps http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=SL6+1EW&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.823255,28.300781&ie=UTF8&ll=51.519212,-0.733509&spn=0.048602,0.11055&z=13 By car, the route planner would suggest 55mins (29.4 miles) but this is obviously subject to traffic conditions. At least you will be going against the rush hour traffic on the M4. Use the route planner on this site. http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp Other routes involve buses to Paddington Station and then by train. Excess of 1hr 10mins and several changes. Planner on this page. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ I have also checked National Express Coaches but there is a long wait a Heathrow Airport which it renders it useless for your purposes. I hope this answers your question. Do not hesitate to ask for clarification of any part of it. Phil answerfinder

The 7:33 would be less than one hour. London Victoria dep. 07:33 (Underground) London Paddington arr. 07:50 London Paddington dep. 08:05 (First Great Western) Maidenhead arr. 08:32 Taking the train from Paddington would be faster: http://nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/print_maps/LondonAndSouthEast.pdf

Thank you Answerfinder. I am aware of the car route, but I want public transport. The trains you found are not direct though, are they? You have to change at Paddington and Slough. So, your answer is no? It can't be, that's not the answer I wanted :). myoarin, I'd be interested if you have an answer. 8.32 is not too late. It's for a 9-5 job, so there is some flexibility. And no, I am not in California. I post questions on uclue on behalf of other people and if I start saying "a friend of mine wants to know", sooner or later it's going to get awkward. I don't want there to be snickering on the answerer's forum when I ask about "a friend of mine" with problems about size or rashes.
Answer clarification by Researcher answerfinder on Thu 25 Dec 2008 - 8:16 pm UTC:
Montecristo, Sorry, I misread the journey details on that website. I failed to click on the more detailed description of the route. Yes, it does involve several changes. Victoria > Paddington via underground, then overland train > to Maidenhead. (Too much Christmas port.) So the answer if definitely no for both. If only the Victorians had agreed for all the competing companies to have one grand station in the of middle London, it would have made life a lot easier today. Phil asnwerfinder

Answerfinder, why would the answer to "Can I get from London Victoria to Maidenhead using public transport ... (i) in less than an hour" be "no" if the journey would only last for 59 minutes when taking the 7:33, i.e. arriving at 8:32?
Comment by Researcher answerfinder on Thu 25 Dec 2008 - 9:15 pm UTC:
Why "definitely no"? From experience I would never rely on the Underground service. In theory they have a timetable, but any slight delay can have a serious knock-on effect. This would make the connection at Paddington likely to be missed if one left at 7.33 (unless they've allowed for such slight delays in the below journey details). London Victoria (VIC) to London Paddington (PAD) Journey Summary Details - Departs Arrives Duration 07:33 08:05 0:32 From London Victoria take the Circle Line (Westbound, Platform 1) which is a direct service to London Paddington. Alternatively; From London Victoria take the Victoria Line (Northbound, Platform 3) to Oxford Circus. Change and take the Bakerloo Line (Northbound, Platform 4) to London Paddington. London Paddington (PAD) to Maidenhead (MAI) No calling points. Journey Summary Details - Departs Arrives Duration 08:05 08:32 0:27

This is the site I was using: http://www.transportdirect.info/web2/ Here is a the route; definitely lots of changes and very much subject to Phil's doubts about connections working: "Journey(s) found for London Victoria Rail Station to Maidenhead Town Centre, Maidenhead (Berks), Windsor & Maidenhead Details Details selected Outward journeys for Tue 13 Jan 09 leaving after 07:00 Option Transport Changes Leave Arrive Duration Select 1 Train, Underground, Walk 2 07:02 08:07 1hour, 05 mins 2 Train, Underground, Walk 3 07:29 08:24 55 mins 3 Train, Underground, Walk 2 07:42 08:32 50 mins 4 Train, Underground, Walk 3 07:58 08:54 56 mins 5 Car 0 07:00 08:02 1hour, 02 mins / 29.3miles Start Victoria Underground Station Start of journey leave 07:29 Underground Victoria 5 mins Take London Underground/Victoria towards Walthamstow Central arrive 07:34 Oxford Circus Underground Station Change here Walk 2 mins Walk to Oxford Circus Underground Station Change here depart 07:36 Underground Bakerloo 8 mins Take London Underground/Bakerloo towards Queen's Park arrive 07:44 Paddington Underground Station Change here Walk 8 mins Walk to Paddington National Rail Stn Change here depart 07:52 Train 14 mins arrive 08:06 Slough Change here depart 08:13 Train 11 mins Take First Great Western towards Reading arrive 08:24 Maidenhead End of journey Phil's first suggestion of the direct train seems the surest bet, albeit longer than one hour. Phil's "direct train" is actually the same as FP's suggestion: underround to Paddington and train from there to Maidenhead.

Myomy, Myo I hate to impugn your reputation as the Mighty Myo but I am sorry to say that your estimate of 2 hr 10 min for me to travel door-to-door from my home to TNA overstates my actual journey time by some 25 minutes although your cost estimate of £22 is close enough. Now explain that! Bryo
Comment by User myoarin on Fri 26 Dec 2008 - 11:19 am UTC:
Bryan, I am glad to hear that. I just took the information calculated by that website. Obviously, it didn't take your route. Cheers, Myo
