I know you're all good at naming films but I'll be surprised if you get
this one.

In 1992 (or 91 or 93), I saw a film. It may have been a bit older because I
remember it being slightly sepia-like (the film was in colour), but maybe
that was the equipment. All I remember is:

1. It was a comedy.
2. It was set in France and I am pretty sure was a French because the main
actor was French. He was blond (remember that I was sure
http://uclue.com/?xq=1291 was black and white when in fact it wasn't),
30-50 years old. I do not think it was Depardieu or Daniel Auteuil or Jean
Reno (the only French actos I can think of). I cannot remember if the movie
was in English, or with subtitles.
3. The main characters are him and a woman, maybe 30 years old. They are
trying to get to somewhere, a conference perhaps, and that is one of the
main comedy things, the difficulty of the journey.
4. The only scene I remember is that their car runs out of petrol on the
motorway in France. He is standing beside it with an empty plastic oil
canister which he needs to go to fill up at a petrol station, and while he
stands there looking frustrated, three or four oil tanker lorries pass
behind him.

It really sounds like Trafic with Jacques Tati but your description is
nothing like him. Perhaps the film you saw was an homage to him.
Does any of the below ring a bell?

"Monsieur Hulot works as a designer for the motor company Altra. His
latest creation is a luxury camping car, equipped with all modern
appliances, which is to be revealed at a motor show in Amsterdam. The car
is loaded aboard a truck, which sets off for the show, followed by Hulot
and Maria, the public relations secretary. A string of disasters strikes
- the trunk breaks down, runs out of petrol, gets impounded by the customs
officers, and then ends up in a multiple car crash. Despite these
setbacks, Maria is determined to get Hulot’s invention to the motor show
on time"

"..there are also some wonderfully funny visual gags, such as the one in
which Hulot is walking down the highway with an empty gas can looking for a
petrol station and notices a man doing the same thing but walking in the
opposite direction."

I've now found the relevant scenes in Trafic, 6 mins into this clip and
goes on to the end, but tankers do not seem to form part of the scene.

I am speechless.

The tankers come in at 8:03. Actually, the movie doesn't seem very funny
now.
