Asked by brudenell on Fri 6 Feb 2009 - 7:11 pm UTC:

A 52 year old male, born and raised in Hong Kong, emigrated to Canada in
the early 1980's. Now wishes to return with his family to Hong Kong.
Question: Would he need to show assets held in Hong Kong with his wife
(originally from China) and children (Canadian born) in order to return to
HK? Are there any requirements or barriers that he should be aware of?

Depending on what passport you're holding.

If you have a Canadian passport, you need to check with the Chinese
Counscilate if you need a Visa.

If you don't need a ViSA you can travel with you're family as a tourist
because since you have been living from 1980 in Canada you must have lost
you're Hong Kong VISA.

After you enter as a Tourist, go to the immigration office in Hong Kong,
find out how you are supposed to reapply for Residency and accordingly you
need to file the papers. Ofcourse if you have assets it will be much more
effective in getting you're HK residency.

You don't have to disclose assets but if you do it will make you're case
ALOT more attractive to gain back you're residency.

May I ask, what passport does the father and mother hold (Nationality)?
This may have impact on the requirements/entry barriers. Thanks.
