I would like to see some data in percentage terms on cigarette smoking rates around around the world,by country. IE The government of my country,Australia, claims that 23% of the adult population smoke cigarettes. Sounds reasonable I guess but I note that while my state, Victoria, claims this figure also, one other Australian state claims that only 14% of its adult population smoke!! I accept that such data may not be readily available in a true "apples versus apples" comparison, eg the term adult may be applicable at 21 in some nations but 18 in another, such as Australia, but at least some indicative figures would be nice to see.

Hi John, I located a WHO document titled "The Demographics of Tobacco". It offers cigarette smoking data, demographics and statistics by country. Download here: http://www.who.int/tobacco/en/atlas40.pdf Would this document meet your needs or do you require additional data? Best regards, Bobbie7

johnfrommelbourne, The World Health Organization offers a wealth of tobacco related statistical information. From "The WHO REPORT ON THE GLOBAL TOBACCO EPIDEMIC, 2008" http://www.who.int/tobacco/mpower/en/index.html Appendix III: Internationally comparable prevalence estimates "Appendix III provides adjusted and age standardized data on the prevalence of tobacco use for the 135 Member States." Download here: http://www.who.int/entity/tobacco/mpower/mpower_report_prevalence_data_2008.pdf ......... Appendix V: Global Youth Tobacco Survey data "This appendix provides information on tobacco use among youth population derived from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey data collected between 2000 and 2006. Only countries participating in the Global Youth Tobacco Survey are listed in these tables. The data presented in this report might be different from the data in the survey fact sheets because they have been adjusted to the age group 13-15 years old." Download here: http://www.who.int/entity/tobacco/mpower/mpower_report_youth_data_2008.pdf ------------------------------------------------ From "The Tobacco Atlas" http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2002/9241562099.pdf Table A: the demographics of tobacco Population. Download here: http://www.who.int/entity/tobacco/en/atlas40.pdf ------------------------------------------------ A color coded map "Smoking among males aged 15 and over" http://www.who.int/tobacco/en/atlas5.pdf ------------------------------------------------ Here is a useful application to pull up data on tobacco use. Select Indicator "Tobacco Use" and country of your interest. https://apps.who.int/infobase/report.aspx?rid=116 For example: Here is the information that is provided for Australia https://apps.who.int/infobase/report.aspx?rid=116&dm=8&iso=AUS&searchButton=Search+Surveys I hope the information provided is helpful!
