I was given the following information in class:
"
This original painting - of which this is an etching - was done by one of
H.P. Lovecraft's favorite artists. Who is that artist? What is the name
of this painting? Why is it included as part of a class called
"Reformation and Revolution"
"
Here is a link to the picture.

I am not looking for an answer to the questions asked in the prompt!! I
simply need the name of the author and the title of the piece.

Thanks!

TYPO: " I simply need the name of the author and the title of the piece."

CORRECTION: "name of the artist". Also this is an etching not a painting if
that helps.

ciumtt,

Search on the internet has always been focused on text, but in the last few
years, there have been increasingly sophisticated search tools that
actually 'recognize' images.

The best of these, in my opinion, is TinEye, which is well-described in
this Web-Owls article:

http://web-owls.com/2009/11/02/searching-for-similar-images/

A search at TinEye for your image comes up with the following:

http://www.tineye.com/search/48311f08e63b1a1e28f387a6408acb24d25aa0cc

which leads directly to:

http://www.allposters.com/-st/Holloway-Posters_c79864_.htm

giving the artist as Holloway (but with oddly scanty information, for some
reason). But a subsequent search on [ holloway nightmare ]

leads us to this page:

http://www.artoftheprint.com/artistpages/holloway_thomas_fuseli_henry_nightmare.htm

explaining the painting, 'Nightmare', originally by Fuseli, the subsequent
etching by Holloway, and perhaps enough context to answer your assignment
question.

By the way, this very image was the object of a recent discussion among
some of the Uclue regulars, but I can't for the life of me pinpoint where
(or when) it took place. Perhaps one of them will be good enough to remind
us in the Comments section.

If there's anything more you need here, please let me know.

David

Why should it take a Very Humble and the Most Common of Commentators to
show such a Master Researcher How to Research Stuff on Uclue?

My Search Strategy was:

You have successfully removed all my inhibitions about submitting my
application to become a Real Researcher.

Where shall I send it?

Note the correct spelling: Füssli, Johann Heinrich, anglasized to Henry
Fuseli

Here is the original of your etching:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Johann_Heinrich_F%C3%BCssli_053.jpg

As explained here, Füssli made a couple more paintings of the scene:
