I'm looking for the length in minutes of the average Broadway theater show. Ideally this would be an industry average derived from a large sample. I will take a figure for any decade in the last 30 years. I will pay an extra $25 for any additional data point in a different decade (1970s and later) but no more than one point per decade.

Note: This question is part of a larger series. I'm posting several additional questions similar to this one. Please see this earlier question (which is still open, as of this posting) for additional background: http://uclue.com/?xq=4298

Would one example of a show per decade be enough for the $25 bonus?

By the way when you say that the data should be derived from a large sample, do you mean that the data should come from a study or survey?

The data points — either current or past -- need to come from a study or survey; they cannot be from a single show or even just a few shows.

I found a list of current Broadway shows. The show length is listed for forty shows.

Would the average show length from these 40 shows work for you ?

It might. It wasn't clear from your statement whether  the list of current shows was 40 long, so that it had a time for each show, or whether only 40 out of the total X had a time. Whether the 40 represent an average depends on what X is. If X is more than 50, my concern would be whether the ones that list times are biased in any way. Why did some list their times but not others? You would need to establish that the shows not listed had times (found independently) that approached the average derived from the 40.

This site lists 45 Manhattan Broadway theaters:
http://www.newyorkcitytheatre.com/index.php#topListing

An average of any 40 of those should be pretty indicative.

I'm not a Researcher (so what do I know anyway?) but I've been to several Broadway shows and I'd like to make a guess ...

That the average time is 2½ hours plus a 20-minute break.

I will check the list again and see if I can find the times and will let you know.

The length of the shows include intermissions in the length of each show.

For example:
2 hours, including one 15 minute intermission
1 hour, no intermission
105 minutes, including one intermission (many don't mention the length of
the intermission)

I would have to use the the length of the show with the intermissions included. Would that be a problem?

You could deduct 15-20 minutes from those which had intermissions.

The “Talkin Broadway” website contains the list of Broadway Shows I mentioned in my clarification.
http://www.talkinbroadway.com/boards/

I cleaned up the list and added the running times for the shows that didn’t have them, with a link to the source.

53 shows have running times and 13 shows don’t because they haven’t opened yet.

Broadway and Off-Broadway Shows are provided in this listing.
Should Off-Broadway shows be included or not?

Is this list suitable?  Should I make any changes to this listing?
Please let me know in order to proceed in calculating the average running time for  a Broadway Show.

Kevin2Kelly,

According to my calculations, the average Broadway theater show lasts 113.20 minutes.

I am including a link to the spreadsheet with the information.
