Asked by bigjosh on Tue 1 May 2007 - 1:21 am UTC:

I am looking for a relable estimate for the total numebr of residential
photo-voltatic systems installed in the US in 2006.

This includes grid-tied and non-grid tied systems.

I am looking for the count of the number of systems, not the total capacity
(which is about 120 MW).

Uclue Researcher Request for clarification by Researcher davidsarokin on Tue 1 May 2007 - 1:27 am UTC:

bigjosh,

Just to be clear, are you looking for:

(a) the number of residential units installed during 2006, or

(b) the total number installed in all years, up to and including 2006?

Thanks.

Question clarification by bigjosh on Tue 1 May 2007 - 1:28 am UTC:

Aprox total number of new systems put into service in calender year 2006.

Good eye for the ambiguity of "installed".

Thanks,
josh

bigjosh,

Here we go...straight from the horse's mouth.

The installed base of residential PV units is as follows:

2005: 8,366 homes with PV units
2006: 12,093
2007: 23,783 (projected)

As you can see, the change from 2005 to 2006 is (12,093 - 8,366) or:

3,727 residential units installed in 2006.

The source for this information is the Energy Information Administration
within the US Department of Energy, and is unpublished "reference table"
data that goes into the production of Annual Energy Outlook reports:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/aeoref_tab.html

The data was provided to me by an EIA staffer, who can be contacted
directly at:

I trust this fully answers your question, but if there's anything more you
need, just let me know by posting a Clarification, and I'll be happy to
continue researching this for you.
